Objectives : The aim of this study was to identify whether Samul-tang(Siwa-tang) with Puerariae radix extracts (SMG) induced inhibiting activity on the resorption of bone in ovariectomized (OVX) rats.
Methods :Adult female rats as an in vivo animal model was selected and forty were randomly assigned equally into four groups: normal control group; OVX group; OVX + SMG 1,250 mg/kg/day (T1); OVX + SMG 2,500 mg/kg/day (T2). Ten days after operation first two groups were treated with normal saline, T1 and T2 group with SMG for 7weeks, respectively.
Results :1. SMG significantly suppressed the increase of weight and abdominal fat of OVX rats. 2. Plasma LDL-cholesterol levels were significantly decreased following weeks. 3. Administration of SMG had a tendency to increase the bone meneral density in OVX rats. 4. SMG improved loss of trabeculae, increase of fat cell, osteoclast and uterus atrophy of OVX rats.
Conclusion :These results propose the possibility that estrogenic traditional herb medicine such as SMG can be one of candidates for the treatment or prevention of osteoporosis.
